voice and an
unmatched style
This bronze-colored woman holds a
musical message from Cuba and Africa in her throat. Since her early days on the
radio program The Supreme Court of Art
–where she won first place singing “El Yerbero Moderno”, by Néstor Milí- up to our days, Carmen Flores has interpreted many different Cuban and
foreign songs. Her style makes it impossible to confuse her with another
singer. She’s one of her kind.
From her early career she recalls Isolina Carrillo, who accompanied her many times on the
piano. Also the famous orchestra
conductor Obdulio Morales…
“Because when you have a long career you must look back to the beginning and be
grateful to all those that helped and inspired you”.
The nightclubs and TV programs where Carmen left her mark as an unmatchable artist come up almost at the same time in
her many memories.
“I worked on almost all the Afro
Cuban shows made by
Obdulio Morales;
at the nightclubs PARISIÉN, TROPICANA, MONTMARTRE, and that of the CAPRI hotel;
and also in primetime variety TV shows.
I’ve also performed in different countries of which I keep good memories
–specially Spain and Mexico”.
Currently and for the last seven
years, she sings at the PALACIO DE LA ARTESANIA. Tourists are astonished with her powerful voice because she
usually interprets the most difficult numbers without using the mike. She
states she’s satisfied with her first complete CD: “Babalú”, in which she’s
accompanied by the Clave Cubana band, and
adds:
“Many people tell me I have a fresh and
strong voice, the same as forty years ago, and I think this is greatly due to
the fact that I’m always working”.
Carmen is capable of admirably summarizing her life:
“I was born in Media Luna, today
Granma province. I came to the capital in 1954, I worked as a maid and a little
later I went to José Antonio Alonso´s Supreme Court of Art and doors started to
open for me thanks to Néstor
Milí –an indispensable composer in
Cuban music and founder of the Los
Zafiros ensemble.
One last question: What expression would you like to see associated to
your name?
“Carmen Flores –a tireless defender of Cuban music”.
